Leonard Shelby of Memento (2000) is a morally flawed character - it is indicated in Memento that he may be aware of his involvement in the death of his wife and has knowingly created an alternate personality who is fragile due to his ‘condition’ but yet is able to cope with anger and resentment as he ‘willingly’ will not remember it. 'Shelby' is representative of the survival function of trauma, as he cannot accept his involvement in his wife’s death.

Memento had the unique tagline of “Some memories are best forgotten” but how much control does one have over their trauma affected memory? The trauma which has affected Leonard Shelby’s mind has caused severe dislocation, his alternate personality that of the ‘conditioned’ Shelby, whose insensitivity to pain, depersonalization, and inability to recall time has passed - is justified by his short-term memory loss also known as anterograde amnesia. This is the manifestation of his guilt and grief for Shelby and his condition is taken one step further into self-destructive behavior, as Shelby is further demoralized and rendered an avenging angel. Shelby’s fragmented memory causes much ambiguity for the audience but again this is the nature of Memento. However in decoding 'Leonard Shelby' a number of truthful memories are uncovered:
