The world of Carnatic music was once faithfully a male domain. Carnatic music is believed to be originated from Hindu Gods and Goddesses, and can be found in the southern regions of the Indian subcontinent with a focus on vocals. A major instrument that is played in a lot of Carnatic music is the veena. There are many types of veena’s, but the sort that is played in south India resembles a large lute. It was within the traditions of Carnatic music that Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi (Subbulakshmi means “the auspicious goddess of wealth”) or MS was raised and became world famous for.

The Beginnings of a Prodigy Carnatic Singer

In the temple town of Mandurai, British India in 1916, Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi (MS as she is known globally) was born to a renown family of instrumentalists. Her father was Subramania Iyer, and her mother, Shanmukavadiver Ammal, was a veena player and was an avid stage performer. Many times when MS was little, she would hum along to her mothers playing. Her grandmother, Akkammal, was also a great musician, and her passion was being a violinist. These two women would end up setting the stage for MS’s musical career.

As a child, she was taken to and taught Carnatic music by Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer. It was while being taught by Iyer that it was discovered MS was a prodigy in the Carnatic music world. To broaden her musical education, MS was also briefly taught Hindustani music by Pandit Narayanrao Vyas, she also learned Sanskrit and telugu by Dr. Nedunuri Krishnamurthy. When she reached the equivalent of the American fifth grade, MS decided to quite school and dedicate her life to music.

MS’s Multimedia Filled Life

MS continued to be trained by the teachers or vidwans mentioned above, but also by others. By the age of 10, MS debuted as a singer at a concert at Madurai Sethupati High School. She once again sang an amazing performance at age 17 in 1933 at the Madras Music Academy. Performing at the music academy was the first of several turning points in her life, since the Academy broke with tradition and invited MS as a key performer. This was her first performance as a soloist. It was at that performance that she quickly rose to become one of the leading Carnatic vocalists. Not long after that Academy performance, she recorded her first record in 1926. This lead to her teenaged and young adult years of constant touring and concerts around South India.
