Security (Anti Theft) Devices

If you have a trailer, then some kind of security lock for it is a must. Unfortunately, horse trailer accessories and trailers themselves can be as vulnerable to theft when you are out at events as they are in your own yard. Many insurance companies insist that you have some kind of locking device for your trailer, and some want more than one, so be sure to check your policy details. The most common devices are:

Wheel Lock/Clamp

This is a clamp that fits onto the trailer wheel and immobilizes it. It should be fitted to the back wheel, so that the trailer cannot be lifted up onto its back wheels for towing. Prices range from about $30 - $200 dollars as of 2011.

Hitch Lock

There are various options available here, but they are all designed to fit onto the hitch of the trailer to prevent it being hooked up to a towing vehicle. Some insurance companies won’t accept hitch locks alone, as cases have been known where thieves have by-passed the hitch altogether by using a thick chain to attach a stolen trailer to a towing vehicle.
